My video argument assignment deals with American Consumption. In the video I try to show a harsh reality in how our over consumption here in the United States is adversely effecting people in less fortunate countries such as in Africa. I put staggering statistics on how much we eat, and how much we also throw out. This food that is not eaten could easily be given to the poor who don’t have the resources to eat even a meal a day. Also as effect, I decided to use the fast food corporations here in the united states as a target. We are the only country who seems dependent on these chains.

I may do something along the lines of how big we are as users in America. The resources used in America compared to all other countries in the world is staggering. Although we are a very dense country in population, I will support with evidence that we do not need to use the resources as we do.

For this project, I chose to argue the debate whether different cultures can really coincide with one another. When most people think of the word coexist, they think of different religions attempting to coincide. With different cultures come different religions, colors, and ideas. I am fortunate enough to have experienced these differences in several diverse countries. I think that people, especially here in America, need to open up more. I think that Americans have a hard time accepting other cultures. After traveling abroad a few times I have become aware of these things and I want to show in my photos that we can all be worldlier. The photos I put up are from my experience in South America. I was there with kids from South America, Central America, North America, Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa. From this I gained so much knowledge about the world and its’ people and I would like to share what I experienced so people can have a different understanding of the subject.

I have decided to take a different path with my photos than I had originally chosen to do. I will use these photos to show that different cultures can coexist with one another.

This is a response to the video documentary “America for Dummies”. I think that Naiz Mosharraf did a great job in creating this documentary. He chose a subject that was meaningful to him and translated it in a way that it should be meaningful to the youth in the United States. I have seen videos like this before in which people throughout New York city were asked to name a country that started with a “U”. Some of the people failed to even think of their own country that they are living in. Naiz went around aroud and showed pictures of people with political power, then also showed the same people pictures of people from the pop culture. It tells a lot of our country and it’ youth when Paris Hilton is quickly recognizable but our leaders are not. He also does a good job in showing that maybe our leaders are teaching us wrong. He shows a clip of George Bush saying that there is evil in the middle east. This only evokes hate. Instead of doing this, Naiz thinks that our government should educate us on the positions that these people are sometimes put into and how they grow up.

Written Literacy Narrative

Learning a language is a process. A process that is easily forgotten if not practiced and the language is not being used. While I do remember bits and pieces of learning to read and write in English, learning a second language still burns freshly in my memories.

They say that learning a language as a child is much easier than learning as you grown older; something to do with growth and development of the human brain. This all makes sense and I am one that can vouch for this claim. It is true, learning a second language is one of the hardest tasks I have ever attempted, and achieved in doing.

When first arriving in a foreign country (one that I will soon call home), the language barrier hit pretty hard.

“E ai, juiz! Filho da puta!” My host dad explained that this was the right thing to say when going to a soccer game. I soon found out from the starring eyes that it was not necessarily the nicest thing to say.

Reading and writing was the next step in my journey to learning a new language. I remember when I was younger I would read the book Where the Wild Things Are. I would brag to my neighbors that I could read. It took me 21 years to realize that the book consisted of one lined phrases and a large picture per each page. Oh well, I thought that I was special.

Reading was the one thing that had saved me while in my early months of being abroad. My family just so happened to have a handful of English written books. Oddly enough, Harry Potter soon became my best friend in this new estranged world.

Using the same process I as did when I was a child learning the English language, I was able to eventually read and write in another language.
